Radiological Environment Lead

Sizewell C is entering an exciting phase of growth as we mature into an independent organisation and continue building one of the UK’s largest and most important energy projects. We are now recruiting the below position:

Position: Radiological Environment Lead

Location: London or Bristol preferred. Manchester can be considered. Hybrid working with a minimum of 2 days per week in the office.

Contract: Permanent, full-time

Salary: Starting from £64,000 depending on experience, plus benefits 

Benefits include: 

• Annual Leave: 28 days per annum, increasing to 30 days after 5 years of service, plus bank holidays
• Bonus: 5% annual bonus

About the Role:

As a Radiological Environment Lead, you will lead the delivery of the Radioactive Substances Regulation (RSR) Environmental Permit requirements for the future operation of Sizewell C, ensuring appropriate and proportionate arrangements are in place throughout the different stages of the project.

The role provides Intelligent Customer capability across a broad range of topics, including the application of Best Available Techniques (BAT), environmental design assurance and regulatory compliance. You will provide technical leadership and advice across procurement, commissioning and operations, supporting internal governance processes and overseeing complex deliverables.

Working closely with internal teams, including the responsible designer and external partners, you will lead key interfaces across the project and maintain strong engagement with the Environment Agency.

As the project evolves through construction, commissioning and operations, this role offers an excellent opportunity to apply expertise in radioactive waste management and environmental protection within one of the UK's largest infrastructure projects.

Key Responsibilities:

• Provide technical advice on radioactive discharges, radioactive waste management and environmental protection to support compliance with the RSR Environmental Permit.
• Support the application and demonstration of Best Available Techniques (BAT) across design, procurement, commissioning and operational arrangements.
• Deliver Intelligent Customer capability through the review and assurance of technical documentation, supplier deliverables and design outputs.
• Contribute to environmental permitting activities, including permit compliance, regulatory submissions and regulatory engagement.
• Support the assurance and substantiation of Environmental Protection Equipment (EPE).
• Work collaboratively across multidisciplinary teams, including the Responsible Designer, commissioning, operations and supply chain functions, to ensure environmental requirements are effectively embedded.
• Act as a key technical interface with the Environment Agency and other regulators, supporting inspections, submissions and issue resolution.
• Provide technical oversight of complex environmental deliverables.
• Lead environmental design assurance activities, including the review and approval of significant design changes.
• Coordinate and deliver BAT assessments.
• As an appointed member of the HPC Corporate Radioactive Waste Adviser (CRWA) Body, provide authoritative advice on radioactive waste management and environmental protection, ensuring compliance with the HPC RSR Environmental Permit.
• Mentor and support the development of junior team members while contributing to wider team capability growth.
• Represent the SS&A Environment Team and CRWA Body in company forums and cross-functional meetings.

Knowledge & Skills:

Desirable

• Experience working with UK regulators and developing effective regulatory relationships.
• Knowledge of environmental legislation, permitting requirements and technical environmental issues relevant to the nuclear industry.

Qualifications & Experience:

• Degree qualified, or equivalent, in a science or engineering-related discipline.
• Working knowledge and practical application of Radioactive Substances Regulations and Best Available Techniques (BAT) within UK nuclear facilities.
• Holds, or is working towards, Radioactive Waste Adviser (RWA) status.

Desirable

• Experience preparing, reviewing or delivering contractual documentation, or providing technical support to contracts.
• Chartered status, or working towards Chartership, with a relevant professional body (e.g. Society for Radiological Protection, Engineering Council or equivalent).
• Experience operating within an Environmental Management System (EMS) aligned to recognised standards such as BS EN ISO 14001:2015, including the development of procedures to support compliance.
